GLL is looking for a Data Engineer to join our dynamic Business Insights team based at our vibrant Head Office in Woolwich. If you’re passionate about data engineering, innovation, and making a real difference in communities, this is more than just a Data Engineer job – it’s a career with purpose.

At GLL, the UK’s largest public leisure operator and a charitable social enterprise, we use data to shape better lives. We’re looking for a talented Data Engineer to help scale our Azure-based platform and transform raw data into meaningful insights that drive decision-making across 400+ facilities — from leisure centres and libraries to children’s centres and elite sports venues.

As a Data Engineer, you’ll play a central role in how we gather, structure, and use data to support operational excellence and social impact. You’ll work in a collaborative and mission-led environment where your contributions truly matter.

What you’ll do:

  • Design, build and maintain scalable ETL/ELT pipelines using Databricks, Azure Data Factory, Airflow, and other orchestration tools

  • Optimise and manage our SQL Server databases and Azure Data Lake environments

  • Develop robust, analyst-friendly data models that power high-impact reporting in Power BI

  • Integrate complex data from systems like CRM, finance, and operations into a clean, central warehouse

  • Use Python, Databricks, and Azure Synapse for advanced processing, transformation, and automation

  • Collaborate closely with analysts and business teams to ensure reliable, high-quality data flows

At GLL, no two days are the same — your work will power decisions that improve health, happiness, and opportunity for millions of people.

What you need:

  • Experience working with Azure data services – including Data Factory, Blob Storage, and Synapse Analytics

  • Strong SQL and data modelling skills, especially for analytics and BI

  • Knowledge of Power BI datasets, service infrastructure, and refresh pipelines

  • Hands-on experience with Databricks, Airflow, or similar tools

  • Bonus: Experience in CI/CD, DevOps, or data governance in a BI environment

  • A collaborative mindset, strong communication skills, and a desire to use data for good

As a leader within the leisure industry, we can also offer scope to progress your career and job variety like nowhere else. As a charitable social enterprise and cooperative owned by our staff, GLL is a unique organisation for you to have a career with!

The basics:

  • This is a Full time permanent based at our vibrant Woolwich Head office.
